Eligibility Requirements
Who Can Take a Driver Safety Program?
Any Indiana driver can choose to complete a Driver Safety Program (DSP). However, drivers typically do so for the following reasons:
- You received a notification from the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) that you are required to complete a DSP.
- You received a court order that you must complete a DSP as an alternative to suspension of driving privileges.
- You are not required to complete a DSP, but you wish to have a 4-point credit applied to your driving record.
Please Note: Whether completing an Indiana DSP is required or voluntary, you will only receive a 4-point credit once every three years.
Why Am I Required to Complete a DSP?
Typically, if you receive notice that you must complete a DSP, it is because of one of these reasons:
- You have committed two or more traffic offenses within a 12-month period.
- You are under 18 years of age AND:
- You have been convicted of two or more traffic offenses;
- You have been involved in two or more collisions;
- A combination of these has occurred;
Take a DSP Course If You Got a Ticket for Holding Your Cell Phone While Driving
Beginning August 1, 2021, driving while holding a telecommunications device (e.g., cellphone, tablet, laptop) will result in a traffic ticket and 3 points added
to your driving record. If you accumulate too many points on your driving record, your license may be suspended. If you’ve had points added to your driver record
because you broke the hands-free law, you can voluntarily take a BMV-approved Driver Safety Program (DSP) course to get a 4-point credit on your driver record.
Reducing the points on your record by completing a DSP course can help reduce your insurance rate, should it go up as a result of your ticket.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Are Indiana Online Driver Safety's courses approved?
Yes, all of our courses are approved by the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
This means we are approved in all counties throughout Indiana (See Approved Counties).
How do I know my county or court will accept Indiana Online Driver Safety Programs?
We are approved in all counties, cities, and courts in the State of Indiana.
Which of the four courses should I take?
All four of our Indiana Driver Safety Program courses (Basic, Mature, Teen, and Truck) are approved by the Indiana BMV. Each course is tailored to a different audience: the Mature course is geared toward drivers ages 55 and over, the Teen course is specifically designed for teen drivers, and the Truck course works best for drivers who have a Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
Please check with your court to ensure that you are allowed to take any of the four courses. Your court may order you to take a specific course.
What's the difference between the Online course, the Video course and the DVD course?
You can choose to take our Online course, our Video course, or our DVD course when selecting a Basic Driver Safety Program. All of the courses are approved and will meet your DSP requirement. Both the Online and Video courses are taken online, and both courses contain videos. The DVD course is taken via DVD.
The Online course includes more interactive elements, like games, polls, and slideshows. Our Video course contains all of the same course information, but it is made up of only video instruction. The DVD course allows students who do not have Internet access, or who prefer to take their course via a DVD course, to fulfill their DSP requirement.
The type of course you choose really depends on what type of learner you are. The Online course is better for students who prefer to interact more with their course, while the Video course and the DVD course are ideal for students who are visual learners.

What are the benefits of completing a Driver Safety Program?
In addition to earning a 4-point credit on your driving record and satisfying BMV and court requirements (if applicable), completing a Driver Safety Program will help you become a better driver! Completing a DSP will allow you to brush up on your knowledge of road rules, defensive driving techniques, and so much more! A DSP will also inform you of new laws that may not have been in place when you first got your driver's license.
And gaining the knowledge and skills to become a better driver means that there is less of a chance that you will commit traffic violations in the future!
How does our Indiana Driver Safety program work?
Get everything done in three easy steps!
1. Register for the DSP Course
Registration is fast and easy -- only two minutes! You will provide your contact information and create a username and password. Use your username and password to access the course as often as you want. We provide an unlimited number of logins.
2. Take the Course Lessons and Quizzes
The Basic Indiana DSP consists of 10 lessons and quizzes. The course is 4 hours long and includes timers to ensure that you are spending enough time on each lesson to absorb the information. However, you can complete the course at your own pace: a little at a time or all in one sitting. Each time you log in, we automatically take you to where you last left off.
Throughout the course, you will be asked personal validation questions to verify your identity. These are simple questions that you will answer during registration. You must answer at least 60% of these questions correctly in order to pass the course.
At the end of each lesson, you will take a 5-question quiz that covers the material you just studied. You must score at least 80% on each quiz (4 out of 5 questions correct) to move on to next lesson. This feature will allow you to easily master the content and help you pass your course with flying colors! We want to make this process as easy and anxiety-free as possible for you.
At the end of the course, you will take a final exam. The final exam is comprehensive and consists of 10 multiple-choice questions. You must score at least 80% on the exam in order to pass. You are allowed unlimited attempts on the final exam at no extra cost.
3. Get Your Certificate of Completion
After successfully completing the Indiana 4-Hour Driver Safety Program, you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion. You will have the option to print a copy for your records. We notify the BMV within 24 hours if you complete the course Monday through Thursday. We notify the BMV the next business day (usually Monday) if you complete the course Friday through Sunday.
We suggest that you check with the Indiana BMV within 7-10 business days after you complete your course to make sure everything has been processed on their end. It can take up to 10 business days for the BMV to process your completion, so please plan accordingly to meet your deadline. Your license may be suspended if you do not complete your course on time.
Please Note: If you are taking a course because of a court order, you are required to deliver your certificate to your court.
